Yellow Sweet Clover (Melilotus officinalis) – Biennial
A tall, fragrant pollinator plant with clusters of small yellow flowers that produce abundant nectar. Highly attractive to bees and valued for strong, consistent bloom in its second year.
Sowing tips:
- Depth: 5–10 mm (¼–½ inch)
- Germination: 7–14 days
- Spacing: can be sown dense, but thin if overcrowded
Coverage (dense sowing): ~20–30 sq ft per 20 g
Growing notes:
- Height: typically 3–5 ft (can grow taller in rich soil)
- Sun: full sun preferred
- Water: low to moderate; drought tolerant once established
- Soil: thrives in poor to average soils; very adaptable
Helpful info:
- Year 1: vegetative growth (low profile)
- Year 2: tall plants with heavy flowering and strong pollinator activity
- Deep roots improve soil structure and fix nitrogen
- Can self-seed if allowed to mature
- Best placed toward the back of beds due to height
General Sowing (Urban / Flowerbeds)
- Timing: Spring or early fall
- Prep: Loosen topsoil (2–5 cm), remove weeds
- Seed: Broadcast evenly and lightly cover
- Water: Keep moist until established
Tip: Expect limited blooms the first year—this plant is a long-term pollinator investment.
