Black Oil Sunflower – No.1 (Annual)
A fast-growing, single-season sunflower producing large, pollen-rich blooms that strongly attract bees and other pollinators. Also produces high-energy seeds favored by birds. Easy to grow and well-suited to small garden spaces.
Sowing tips:
- Depth: 20–30 mm (¾–1¼ inch)
- Germination: 7–10 days
- Spacing: 15–30 cm (6–12 in) apart for best growth
- Can be sown dense, but plants will compete and stay smaller
Coverage (dense sowing): ~10–20 sq ft per 20 g
Coverage (proper spacing): ~30–60 sq ft per 20 g
Growing notes:
- Height: typically 4–7 ft depending on spacing and soil
- Sun: full sun required (6+ hours)
- Water: moderate; drought tolerant once established
- Soil: average garden soil is sufficient
Helpful info:
- Blooms mid to late summer; strong nectar and pollen source
- Leaving seed heads supports birds and wildlife
- Stagger planting every 2–3 weeks for extended bloom period
- Works well as a visual backdrop in flowerbeds or along fences
General Sowing (Urban / Flowerbeds)
- Timing: After last frost (late spring)
- Prep: Loosen top 2–5 cm of soil, remove weeds
- Plant: Place seeds at proper depth and cover with soil
- Water: Keep moist until established
Tip: For cleaner appearance in small beds, plant in small clusters instead of broadcasting.
General Sowing (All Varieties)
- Timing: Spring (April–June) or early fall
- Sun: Full sun preferred (minimum 4–6 hours)
- Prep: Loosen topsoil (top 2–5 cm), remove weeds
- Method: Broadcast evenly, lightly rake or press in
- Water: Keep moist until established
Tip: Mix seed with dry sand for even distribution in small flowerbeds.
