Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) – Perennial

A premium pollinator plant producing soft pink flower spikes rich in high-quality nectar. Highly attractive to bees and valued for clean, light honey. Deep-rooted and long-lived once established.

Sowing tips:

  • Depth: 10–15 mm (½ inch)
  • Germination: 10–20 days
  • Spacing: moderate density; avoid overcrowding

Coverage (dense sowing): ~15–25 sq ft per 20 g

Growing notes:

  • Height: typically 2–3 ft
  • Sun: full sun required
  • Water: low once established; drought tolerant
  • Soil: prefers well-drained, lighter soils (does not like heavy, wet ground)

Helpful info:

  • Slower to establish than clovers but very durable long-term
  • Excellent nectar quality—highly favored by bees
  • Fixes nitrogen, improving soil fertility
  • Does not tolerate waterlogged conditions
  • Minimal maintenance once established

General Sowing (Urban / Flowerbeds)

  • Timing: Spring (best)
  • Prep: Loosen topsoil (2–5 cm), ensure good drainage, remove weeds
  • Seed: Sow at proper depth and lightly firm soil
  • Water: Keep lightly moist until established

Tip: Avoid overwatering—good drainage is critical for successful growth.
